After three hours later of her teaching me how to walk heel to toe and not die, I’d managed several graceful walks around the room without needing the aid of a wall or one of her assistants’ hands. In that time, they’d also had me try on countless gowns, but I hated all of them.

They’d already gotten Chronos ready.

I’d never admit to how I thought he looked handsome in the tuxedo. The jacket had a long back, and over his white button-up, he wore a bright-red vest with a fine detailing of dragons in a paler red thread Unless someone stood close to him, I doubted anyone would be able to tell they were there. Madame S huffed as she looked at the racks of dresses and the ones I’d already rejected. “I don’t know what to put you in. You’re driving me mad!”

I shrugged. Chronos told her she could only put me in something I didn’t hate, so she couldn’t force me into the ones she liked. I think it was the color. She only wanted me in red gowns to match his vest and cravat, but I honestly wanted something black, or at least darker. I felt like a stop sign in the red.

Chronos sighed and went over to a rack with black gowns she hadn’t even glanced at and started thumbing through them.

Madame S gasped. “No, no, no. None of those will look good. The two of you will look like you’re going to a funeral.”

Chronos glanced over his shoulder at her. “Well, it’s clear she’s never going to like something in red. She can match me with accessories, or...” He trailed off as his fingers caught a gown with red on black. He pulled it out and held it up. “This would be perfect. I like this a lot.”

The gown, black down the back, had a slit going up the side. The front was semi-transparent from the navel up. Embroidered with a bright-red, Eastern inspired dragon that crisscrossed over the front of the body, it looked like it would just hide my breasts.

I lifted an eyebrow. It was revealing, but tastefully so. I didn’t mind if people saw my breasts, and I’d been working hard on my abs before all the shit happened. It would be nice to show them off. “I don’t hate that.”

He grinned at me.

Madame S teetered in her heels, hand going to her forehead. “She can’t wear something like that to a gala! Why was that even put into the collection?”

She glared around at her assistants, who scrambled out of her line of sight, not wanting to catch the brunt of her anger.

Chronos shook his head. “She’ll look incredible and fierce, like a bodyguard should, while still fitting into the event.” He stepped forward and handed me the dress. “Go try it on.” With a wink, he placed it in my hands.
